It’s tough to keep tabs on how much we eat. But plenty of research suggests that when we keep an eye on consumption, we eat less. This is known as self-observation, and why writing down what I ate and considered helped me. There are so many methods to do this today: from the old school paper-and-pencil approach to programs like MyFitnessPal, or the Weight Watchers points system.
Another essential strategy: forgive your failures. Studies reveal that individuals who mess up their diet strategy after which give up ending up gaining, while those who forgive themselves and move on continue to reduce. It’s called self-acceptance. I use a take basket in the supermarket, and change from arm to arm while I store: biceps curls!
The adage is eaten less, exercise more, and it continues to be true, to some degree. But human beings are psychologically, and sociologically sophisticated creatures and that adage is a good deal more difficult to follow than it seems.
